You can get an account (text only, no binaries) from eternal-september.org. Thunderbird will work as a newsreader. The newsgroup in question is alt.sex.fetish.diapers. I know that doesn’t describe everyone here, but it’s the only group we’ve got.
In this age of centralisation and commercialism on the Internet, I think Usenet is one of our last hopes. Please spread the word.
Seems too narrow. The fetish part is just a teeny tiny sliver of this life for many.
For me being essentially a big kid that never really grew up or developed adult vices, the last places I want to hang out is with a bunch of raunchy adults with no self control who are only concerned with drinking, drugs, partying, and sex.
Also this site and community wasn’t a victim to commercialization and centralization. It was victim to a single owner who doesn’t wish to continue it or pass it on; it was a personal choice, not any kind of global mandate forced under threat of a gun. We don’t need to go underground just yet.
I miss Usenet, listservs, BBS’s, IRC. The way the commercialization, walled garden platforms, and censorship is going, low-tech and old tech might be the answer in some cases. True P2P decentralization that can’t be controlled, censored, or shut down is the real way of the future.
I don’t want to live in a world without ADISC. I can’t imagine how many thousands of people have been helped and how many are left to help. People are turning 18 every day lost in there recollections of how their parents and their doctor have dealt with their issues. How will they be found? How will they feel loved? I have been here since 2014 and I am eternally grateful for the progress I made in the beginning, understanding it all. I don’t want to live in a world where people are shot at noon. I shall click the link above but the world will never be the same. From Charlotte North Carolina to Utah, to wherever we are on the entire globe, we need to encourage one another. We need to love one another. We need to accept one another. We don’t need to hurt one another.
Usenet and asfd! There are people who still do this?
That’s interesting. It was the place for me when I found out as a twenty something that there are other people like me and I’m not the only one. Even though Canter and Siegel already started there spam, it was still a place where techies and corporation reigned, and where it was considered to be evil if your signature is too long.
And I could only go into Usenet in the computer pool in university, always feeling like a daredevil to read asfd and being careful that nobody found out. On a green text only monitor.
If you didn’t already know, you only sign up for your account on the Web. Actually accessing Usenet requires a client on your local machine called a newsreader. Some (not many) e-mail clients, e.g. Thunderbird, will work as newsreaders. There are instructions on eternal-september.org for setting up a newsreader to work with their service. No offence meant if you already knew this.
