Visiting the Spa

Hi there! I have a very specific question. I have to wear diaper 24/7. How do you go to the Spa? I’m okay on natural beaches with keeping my swimming pants constantly wet with water and having a separate towel for myself to sit on. But this would not work well in a Spa/Wellness hotel would it?

Any ideas there on this?

I would like to know as well.

Stayed a couple days at one a few years back, casino/spa, and was very concerned when using the treatments. while not good advice, I basically dehydrated myself before appointments - cardio exercise.

Best thing is probably to ask in advance. Explain your medical issues, and they will probably make an effort to accommodate them. At worst they can only say no, or exclude you from specific activities.

Most wellness spas I’ve been to you aren’t actually going into any water. For massages, mani/pedi, hair, etc you can just go normally diapered. If you are actually going into a spa or hot tub then just change into your normal swim diaper at the lockers they have.

FWIW, I’ve found a pocket diaper works great for when you plan on making multiple trips in and out of the water. If your remove the padding insert, the empty pocket itself is usually made of a terry cloth lining. It is just enough to absorb any minor dribbles without adding any bulk to the diaper. Note you will need to break a leg seal when you get out of the water though. This will drain any water that will otherwise be contained by the waterproof shell. It can be done somewhat discretely in most cases by tugging at the back seat just like if you’re fixing a wedgie.

I’d also like to enjoy the pools and jacuzzis as well.

unless you are FI, normal swim attire and a towel to wrap around you should be okay. Now massages, stress me out, I don’t want to wet the table an I don’t feel confident enough to let them know beforehand of the potential. thus, dehydration before and lots of water after. Though this will at some point fail and I will need a better approach. I love deep tissue to work out stress knots.

Purposely dehydrating yourself is like purposely cutting yourself- not recommended. I personally go in for a massage every 2-3 months. My go-to diaper is crinklz. Which means yes, the masseuse is probably going to see the prints on my diaper- well beyond just realizing I am diapered. And not ONCE has it ever been a problem or have they made me feel embarrassed in any way. They are paid to be professional, and work with the assumption tipping will happen if you have a great experience. They aren’t going to risk those tips- or their job- by making you feel more stressed when you walk out than you do going in.

That is really good. I have been thinking of going for a massage, but thought I would wear a thick pull-up. That way the masseur/se would be able to get to the glutes! But I need to be a bit braver! Maybe even one of my fitted terry nappies (they have rather juvenile print on them) with plastic pants. That would be the most comfortable for me anyway. I certainly would not go unprotected.

I had several massages wearing diapers. It was never an issue, very professional, nothing was said. I told them prior to the appointment that I wore diapers.

Ah, you just hit on the one actual drawback to wearing diapers during a massage. The glutes (butt cheeks) are difficult for them to get. It’s not uncommon for most masuses to skip the glutes even when we are in underwear though.

I am not as comfortable with telling the masseuse upfront, kind of goes back to having need-to-know engrained into you.

Questions:

I carry a lot of tension in the hips thus, the deep tissue really helps so, when you are wearing a diaper are they skipping the hips and hamstrings?
How do (did) you broach the subject of needing protection to the masseuse or the person at the front desk (scheduling)? At time of beforehand?

On hydration: I wouldn’t call cutting equivalent but, I understand your analogy. Nevertheless, I have this [in color] horrific image of looking like a push-and-squirt toy, :sweat_drops:. Thus, cardio before hand and minimal water is only about 4-ish hours, and that is replenished afterwards.

To answer your questions: 1) Hips and hamstrings/ thighs were not skipped. Only my butt was not part of the massage.

  1. I simply told them that I was incontinent and wore diapers when I called to make the appointment. I have only done this about 2 or 3 times; once when I arrived I was asked if I needed to use the bathroom before the massage. I remained dry during the massages.

I’ve always approached my being diaper with them as a matter of fact kind of topic. Treat it like it’s no big deal, and it really won’t be. Trying hide it is only going to make things weird. They do ask at check in for any medical history that might affect how they treat you. That’s the time to just say “I’m incontnent and need a diaper”, or just “I wear a diaper”. No need for details, and their response to that for me has always been along the lines of “ok that’s not a problem, anything else”.

There’s really no muscles that need massaging in the hips, so they don’t go after that area (same with the stomach and chest). Diaper or no, they will go after your hamstrings. Usually they pull up the sheet from your foot and tuck it in just below your butt so as to not expose anything. Unless you’re at an asian style massage parlor, then they actually prefer you go in the nude.

When you first lay down on the table you will want to tuck in the back of the diaper or pull it down a little too. When they go after your lower back it will help. It seems by default they will skip my glutes because of the diaper, but if you want them to go after those muscles just tell them at the same time you mention your diaper to them. They can work through the padding, but know it takes more pressure and still wont be quite as effective. Or alternatively you might consider pulling the back of your diaper all the way down (your diaper will need to be tapped on a little loosely in order to keep it up in the front though). I’ve done that a few times, and it did work for me.

On hydration, do NOT dehydrate yourself before a massage! Seriously. Massages help break up cell waste, which triggers your body to start flushing it all out. This naturally dehydrates you, and you will be thirsty right after the massage. Do not start out dehydrated or you will be inviting some potentially major complications. You wouldn’t start a marathon race dehydrated for the same reasons, so please don’t do it for a massage either.

Thanks. I will try out your advice when I setup my next massage.

on dehydration, I am not advocating at dangerous levels, refraining from drinking several hours prior can make a big difference; like you are advised when going in for a surgical procedure.

Interesting little fact for you. ANY modern facility or hospital will no longer recommend you refrain from drinking water within 2 or 4 hours of a surgery. They used to think that having ANYTHING in your stomach will react badly with the anesthesia. However; they have come to realize that being dehydrated prior to a surgery is even worse. Now if you look closely they make sure there is no food in your system, not water though.

And I’ll drink to that…

I’ve worn a long style pad under boxer-briefs to every massage I’ve had. They’re 60 - 90 minutes long and you redress in private so the pad gets the job done for me. Afterwards, I’ll put on one of the diapers I keep in my laptop bag. Slomo is right, though. Being dehydrated before a masage is counter productive and defeats the purpose of the massage. However, I will say that I also stop drinking anything 2 hours before the massage to reduce the amount of leaks.

Kind of drifting off topic, last anesthesia trip was two years ago and I recall they didn’t want you to drink an hour before. Even crewing gum, was chew out for this as they were concerned about stomach acid. Anyhoo.

I went for a massage yesterday in the city. There are lots of massage parlours here with mostly Chinese girls many of whom would give you a ‘happy ending’ for the correct remuneration, but this is the first time I have had a massage post prostatectomy. I dribble now without control so I did ask my masseuse if she was alright with me wearing a pull-up, but her English was not very good and I’m not sure she understood. Also I have a troublesome hip and wanted her to get deep into the gutes, so, not wishing to be disrespectful, I opened out some plastic pants and put a terry nappy on top, stripped off and had a brilliant massage. The main difference is that I have always found a massage to be really sexy, willy would perk up as the first oil was applied, but post-op this does not happen any longer which is sad, frustrating, annoying etc. but I will go back in a couple of weeks for another, my tired 70 year old body feels much better!
