So im still kinda new to diapers and all this but it never fails that when I diaper up it always seems like the right leg has the diaper on tighter becuase its digging into my thigh vs the my left leg… using medium megamax with a 33 inch waist… thoughts? Tips?
Hi newguy, there are many ways to tape on a diaper. I tend to put it on leaning against a wall, I tape up bottomtapes first, usually rightside and then left. Then I proceed to do the top ones.![]()

98 % usually fits snuggly.
Taping really differs per body honestly. I have to tape the top ones first when laying down. Usually, I’ll adjust the diaper so it’s more even by holding the sides to my waist and judging if they are evenly placed on the leg. I’m also pretty anal about how it fits so I go through the extra effort to make sure its evenly aligned too. I would try either standing up or laying down first and see which way is more comfortable, then try to make sure it’s evenly placed, then try to tape up. It’s easier doing that laying down though.
Assure you are centering the diaper on your body (left to right) as that is a common problem with one side ending up tighter than the other side.
When you lay on your back with the diaper under your butt before you tape it on, fold the front of the diaper on, then grab the edges of both the front and back wings with your two hands, fit them together, hold them tight and wiggle until you feel that the sides are perfectly symmetrical around you. Then tape the diaper on carefully without shifting its position.
Personally, I tape up top tapes first (making sure both tabs are balanced each side of the central line on the diaper) giving me a snug waistband, and then (after running a finger under for standing the leak guards) I do the lower tapes tight around the top of the thigh, making sure the edge of the diaper forms a flat band around the top of the leg.
One tip: when doing up diaper tapes, don’t pull on the end of the tape. Hold the tape between thumb and finger at the point at which it is attached to the diaper (the base of the tape, not the end). This way you are pulling on the diaper fabric as well as the tape. This way I can get them much tighter, around the legs. Much less risk of becoming uncomfortable or a leak!
It takes a lot of practice. I prefer to be standing, and have the back held in place with a wall. Make sure (very sure!) the diaper is square on your butt and around your waist. I do bottoms first, straight across, then tops angled slightly downward. Lots of wiggling and tug it up to ensure it’s actually seated before I tape the top.
I guess we’re all different shapes and sizes, with different levels of dexterity, mobility and balance, so it’s good to take-in all of these different suggestions and then try a few to see what works best for you.
I tape standing-up, but not leaning against anything. I stretch the diaper lengthways, fold it in half again lengthways to make a small crease down the centre.
I then position the diaper between my legs, pull the front panel up, to about just below my tummy, pull the back part up level, hold the front and back parts together and make sure that it’s straight and then tape bottom right, with the tape angled slightly upward. I then do bottom left in the same way followed by top right with the tape angled ever so slightly downward and then top left the same. As frustratedfarmer says in his post above, a bit of wiggling to ensure that it’s straight is good!
I can’t remember how I came to adopt this method, but I think it was from a video I saw online of a young Scottish guy who had perfected it and could do it really quickly.
It works for me and I very seldom have problems or leaks.
I put my diaper on laying down. I make sure my body is centered on my diaper and then I attach the tapes starting with the bottom tapes and then the top tapes. Then I stand up and adjust the tapes and make sure they are aligned correctly on the plastic taping zone of my diaper for a nice snug fit. Everyone’s body is different on how to properly put on a diaper but the method I use works best for me.
What I do is spread my legs, pull the diaper into position but then close my legs. I then readjust the diaper slightly, and then tape the legs with just enough force. It means it’s leak proof but never cuts into my legs.
My suggestion would be to try a diaper with velcro tabs. Most cloth backed ABDL diapers and all of Tykables diapers have them. They make it really easy to adjust the tapes as often as you need to get the fit just right!
