Ok so I was thinking about something weird today and wondered if anyone had any answers or opinions on it? Basically we all know there are various ways of putting on your diaper yourself be-it lying down on your bed/floor or wherever and pulling it up through your legs and taping etc. Or some people do it standing up against the wall. Now I am not asking the benefit to doing one or the other in terms of where you are doing it or anything but more like is there a benefit to the FIT the diaper has when using one way or the other?
I seem to have the best fit when I diaper myself lying down. I get the diaper night and tight and there is little chance of a leak. Whenever I do it standing up, I seem to never get the diaper as tight as I want it.
Yeah thanks for your input! The reason I even wanted people’s opinion is I almost always put one on lying down but somewhere I read that if you are going to be sitting or moving around alot doing it standing up is better, however if you are getting ready for bed or are going to be lying down you should put it on the same way
Guess I never heard of that. For me laying down is about the only way to go. I only put one on standing if its a pullup or if I do a quick change in a gross public restroom which is when I use a stall wall to help diaper up.
The best fit, for me, is standing against the wall.
I can easily reposition my diapers and make sure I tape up nice and snug.
When I am changing ‘Little Ones’, I’d rather have them laying down to make my job easier ![]()
For me I tend to get the best fit standing up. I’ve tried a few different ways and what I usually end up doing is laying the diaper out on my bed and then stand up facing the diaper, pulling it between my legs (so the front of the diaper is on the bed and the back is dangling between my legs. I then pull it up and tape the bottom tape on one side and the top tape on the other side, adjust as necessary, and then do the two remaining tapes.
For some reason laying down has never really worked for me.
I do absolutely love the new hook and loop design from ABU (Dino Rawrz) because I can very easily adjust the fit if I don’t get it right the first time, or after a few wettings when it hangs heavier.
I get a better fit standing with some diapers, with others its about the same. Don’t use a wall. I am often in a public place so just learned it this way.
It’s been my experience that when I lay down on a bed or rug etc and try to tape up I have a problem with attaching the tapes. If I lean forward (do a bit of a “stomach crunch”) to see where I am sticking down the tapes, that tightens my abs (stomach muscles) and then after I lay back I can immediately feel my diaper getting a lot looser. Basically when I “crunch” to see the tapes, it changes the shape of my waist, and so when i relax (or stand up) it gets really loose. I’ve tried taping extra tight and sometimes that works, as the tapes loosen up to the “right firmness” when I get up, but it’s never been consistent.
Of course if I didn’t lean forward that wouldn’t be a problem, but they I’d have trouble getting the tapes on right. So it’s kind of a catch-22 for me.
So I take while standing up, so my waist doesn’t “change shape” while I am attaching the tapes. This also allows me to use a mirror to make sure I have them symmetrical (I’m a bit OCD that way) as well as getting the wings straightened out so they don’t get crumpled and wrinkled (the back wings, under the front wings) and irritate my skin.
For me, learning how to change while standing was a revelation, in particular since it made it a lot easier for me to wear in public (which I love doing). Now, though, I’m just better at it. I can’t change lying down at all anymore.
I’ve found, with the Northshore Lites Large (which are a tad too large for me, but the mediums hurt to wear), diapering while sitting solves the leakage issue around the inner thighs. I’m happy about this, as they are a great diaper, and hold quite a bit.
I wear better dry diapers most of the time and I tape the lower tapes first (I know where the tapes should go) and pull the diaper up it takes a little finagling to get them up between the thighs but once in place they’re pretty snug all that is to apply the upper tapes
i agree, laying down for me is much better!!
I’ve tried both, and I find that doing it laying down gets a tighter fit, sometimes even a bit too tight. Doing it standing, sitting or against a wall usually makes it a little too loose for my peace of mind. Every time I go a while without wearing though, it usually takes me a practice round of very poorly taping up a diaper just to get used to it again.. Today I put one on upside down!
I find that when I lay down on my couch, I’m able to achieve the most snug fit. I’ve tried laying on the hard floor, which gave a good fit, but not as well as the couch. And standing seems to never be good for me around the legs/butt. I think the couch is best for me because it allows the bend that my body naturally has when in most positions.
I lie down if possible. Everything stays in place while attaching the tapes. In public restrooms I prefer to do it sitting on the toilet seat.
Hi! I wrote this a month ago - and then today I decided to try getting changed while lying down to see if I’d gotten any better at it. I have. I don’t know if I can go back to changing while standing: I can’t remember the last time a diaper’s been this snug on me. It feels incredible! Consider both my diaper and my opinion changed.
Against the wall…changing on a memory foam mattress always throws me off
For me, personally, I find that I get a better fit while laying down, but ultimately it varies from person to person. Your best bet would be to experiment with different methods and see what works best for you.

Since I discovered the technique of changing standing up and without the aid of a wall, I’ve used that method almost exclusively. It’s fast, works great in public restrooms, and gets me a pretty good fit.
The only times I do it laying down are if somebody else is changing me and/or I’m changing them.
