I have an upcoming urology appointment, and I’m wondering what the initial visit is. Is it just a conversation, or will there be some diagnostics? My primary diaper said the Urologist is expecting me in diapers. I think that’s because she knows I wear them for comfort?!?
Quote ““My primary diaper said the Urologist is expecting me in diapers””…didnt know diapers could talk !!!
Perhaps your primary doctor made a note to the urologist about your diaper to give heads up and not think it’s worse that it is. Or just simply so they are not suprised.
Whoops. Lol
I think that’s what it is. I’m just trying to figure out what the first appointment will be like. Since I have a dribbling issue, with my luck I’m getting a DRE. That will be weird with a diaper lol.
It will be a conversation at first. Diagnostics came later and some diagnostic testing was unpleasant to put it mildly
I’ve heard lol
It all depends my first urologist appointment was at his office at the hospital didnt think any thing about it until I arrived checked in and was handed a gown and told to strip down and go to a second waiting room with about 10 other people as there are multiple urologists using same office. A few minutes later ai was on an exam table with a couple of nurses needles to say a fee minutes later Imhad a camera where a camera has never been before.
my second opinion urologist visit a year or so later started in his office, then a ultrasound, then a camera test a week later.
Every urologist does things differently timing wise, ether way dont stress it the testing is a bit embarrassing the first time and a bit uncomfortable but not painful as they numb every thing before the camera is inserted.
Chances are it will be a conversation only the first time but thats what I thought on my first visit ![]()
The camera up my penis , even numbed, made me uncomfortable mentally and physically
If any test at all - it’s just going to be urine and maybe blood -
anything else would need to be scheduled, and likely dose not even have the equipment in the office.
Really?! - Well, maybe slightly - but it was nothing major for me, just numbed it with a local, and was fine. I even watched on a monitor - kind of interesting what goes on in there when you think nothing is…
After the procedure I was shaken emotionally about having a camera attached to my penis. That image has stayed in my mind for years. I would never do that test again
I have a long history with urologists. Your initial visit should be mostly a bunch of questions and paperwork and probably a digital rectal exam (D.R.E.). Then, depending on your answers and why you’re there, will determine future tests and visits.
My first appointment with my first urologist included a cystoscopy. He came in and asked questions at the beginning, then had the nurse move me to the room in his office that was set up for cystoscopy. He was old-school, so it was a rigid cysto, which was very uncomfortable compared with the flexible cystoscopies I’ve had since then. Even with the numbing gel, I was in so much pain after the procedure that I went home and slept instead of going back to work as I’d intended, and I was sore for a couple of days. Some people have more sensitive urethras than others, and cystoscopy can range from mild discomfort all the way to significant pain, especially the first time.
The first visit I had with my second (and current) urologist was just an office visit. It was several visits in that I had a cystoscopy, and learned how much less a flexible scope hurts than the rigid one!
I actually had to have it done twice.
First time, it did mess with me mentally - but since I knew exactly what to expect, second time was nothing.
However - if it’s a problem - but no other way to tell what they are looking for - it is a lot to go through for medical clearance, for something that takes so little time - but you could get a general antithetic, so you would be out through it.
Shutter, same with me, first cysto was with a rigid, subsequent ones were flexible.
If I knew what I know now, I would never had allowed the rigid.
I had been seeing my urologist regularly for several years for prostate issues so when incontinence became a problem I just asked her about it. As part of my regular visits I always get a urinalysis and a urine flow measurement followed by a bladder ultrasound to check for urine retention. So I have to arrive with full bladder. She knew I had urine retention issues but had me come in for a urodynamic study that was done by the incontinence specialist in her group.
What do you do for your retention?
That’s related to prostate growth. I had laser surgery to open up the urethra through the prostate and I take medication to improve urine flow for better emptying. That helps with urge related incontinence but not completely. I also have overactive bladder and I wear pull ups during the day and diapers at night.
Thanks for sharing. I just do not want to use the intermittent catheter.
I would purposely avoid catheters . They can cause infections. Diapers are a cleaner, easier solution
