Idea: Community Donations to Purchase the Site

Like it says on the tin, following Moo’s most recent announcement. I’d like to help if it means the site stays alive.

It might lower the barrier to entry if someone with the knowhow and wherewithal, but not the funds, can’t buy it outright themselves. I can’t say I’ve set anything like this up before, but I wanted to at least gauge interest. Anyone? Any better ideas? Bueller?

I don’t think this is a good idea, FWIW.

I don’t want to deal with one person who is just a placeholder for a large group.

If I sell, I want it to be to a single person who can simply afford to buy it outright with minimal fuss.

Ok. The idea was more around lowering the cost for a single person to do the buying (that single person not representing a group, but being financially supported in the purchase by one…or at least compensating you), but ultimately it’s dependent on what’s workable. If it’s not, it’s not.

Point is, I love the site and want to help. Others might be in that same boat but might not have the resources to purchase it outright and be a responsible owner.

Just wanted to bring the idea up.

whats your price?

There is no set price.

It depends on:

  • Who it is that is buying it (and how confident I am that they’ll do something positive with it)

  • What exactly the “it” is that they are buying (just the domain? domain + extras? which extras? do I need to provide transitional support? what kind, for how long?)

  • When they buy it (the longer they wait, the higher the price is)

  • Other terms of the sale

You’re probably looking at 4 figures for only the domain itself, probably 5 figures if you want extras beyond just the domain.

At this point I have one or two people interested in it, but nothing concrete enough to change plans for.

That may change (I hope it does) but it hasn’t yet.

I really don’t want to deal with a single person who is trying to deal with money gathered from a huge group of other people.

If I sell it, the person buying it needs to be able to afford it, themselves. Not using other peoples’ money.
