I’ll be living without a roommate for the first time in my life ever, and I’m wondering what’s the best way to get that late 80s early 90s diaper smell. Baby powder? Wipes? Diapers with included scents? I crave the smell for the full experience now that I’m not worried about discovery whatsoever.
There’s a few ways ..
I Found some wipes at Walmart called “Pure and Gentle” in a round cannister. It seems to be really close to the vintage pampers scent.
Also, check out the baby powder scent sachets at bed bath and beyond. Leaves a nice scent and plus when you are done with them, you can sprinkle the contents on your carpet to deodorize it.
I have found it hard to get any products like diapers or wipes that have that great smell. But I use scentsy newborn nursery melts all over the house and it really has that great smell. Try that, it might be what you are looking for.
ive tried everything forr about 7 years…no matter how long you stick something in or near a fresh luvs/pamper the smell fades
the scentsy smell you get used too my new plan is to just buy a pack of luvs or pamps with my groceries every two weeks and leave them open and out pretty soon ill have my own isle at my house ![]()

fun fact luvs scent wise have stayed the same since 98
I was wondering why I was hooked on the newer ones too ![]()
I’ve gotten very close to the classic baby scents, like 99.5% close. I use J&J orginal talc baby powder (no longer sold) with J&J baby lotion on my skin. I wash my pj’s, onesies and little clothes with dreft and add the dreft baby scent booster pellets, my wipes are (walmart) parents choice powder fresh. I also pre-treat my diapers by taking 1/3 dreft baby scent pellets in a spray bottles and dissolve them in water, then spray into a diaper, refold and put back on the stack. The scent is very babyish, so when I’m dry I smell like a dreft scent baby, as I get wet the J&J baby powder scent starts to leech through and I get that baby powder scent, then of course my bath times include J&J baby shampoo and J&J body wash.
I started using those Dreft (USA) / Ivory (CAN) laundry scent boosters during laundry on my clothes.. Someone at work said, “Someone smells really nice”. I lol’d to myself.
i am waiting on a custom formulation to see if I have learned anything over the 20 or so years trying to nail it down
I will say that if you spray a baby power perfume and CK obsession for men, into the room, leave and come back in about an hour, you will have Pampers scent in the room. But actually creating that scent from scratch is no easy feat.
A trick I did years ago was I took my favorite smelling wipe and put just a couple in a folded clean diaper. (I would put some in every diaper in a new pack) let them sit for a little while and when I go to use them put the wipe out and put it on. They would hold the smell for a while.
I found some information about Luvs using a product safety link from the FAQ. According to https://smartlabel.pg.com/00037000870777.html Luvs diapers contain the “Fragrance Ingredient” benzyl benzoate
A sweet balsamic, floral with fruity nuances. This ingredient is found in a number of blossoms such as ylang-ylang, tuberose, hyacinth
or rose, and this is why it is used in floral compositions.
For additional information about this ingredient, please see [http://www.fragranceconservatory.com/ingredient/benzyl-benzoate](http://www.fragranceconservatory.com/ingredient/benzyl-benzoate)
I’m thinking this probably is not the whole scent but maybe it will provide a clue.
These wipes! They are Pampers and have a great smell. Worth trying!
Pampers Baby Clean Wipes Baby Fresh Scented 1X Pop-Top - Walmart.ca
Buy Pampers Baby Clean Wipes Baby Fresh Scented 1X Pop-Top from Walmart Canada. Shop for more Baby Wipes available online at Walmart.ca
Also worth trying one of these, they have a scent which may or may not be what you want! It’s a subtle baby scent. Not many diapers have scents.
*Softly scented with a moisture activated vintage fragrance, this will bring you back to your youth. *

This chemical is used to extend the life of the main perfume scent. It is probably the residual smell after the main scent has faded.
@ArchtopK I picked up some Calvin Klein Obsession for Men and mixed it with the “Chemical Guys” brand baby-powder scent (from Amazon) in my diaper pail and in a large empty airtight container, but I didn’t quite detect the Luvs/Pampers scent however all of our noses can be different. What exact baby-powder scent brand did you use? From memory, I would think that Calvin Klein’s CK One would be closer to some Luvs/Pampers notes than Obsession for Men, but I don’t have any to test right away.
I also managed to get a mini $8 tester-bottle of Lorenzo Villoresi Firenze Teint De Neige, but I’m also not sure what to mix with it.
A quick internet search does seem to indicate Amouage Gold (for men?) is a near hit for Luvs/Pampers, if you could get rid of one or more of the musk notes, but its too bad the price is pretty outrageous, even on eBay.
Its frustrating P&G has the formula and could even be selling it as a separate product making $$$, but they haven’t thus far, yet the formula remains a secret.
You’re about 30 to 40 years past my era of experience for my childhood memories. Although, in the 80’s my wife and I were diapering our kids, but it was with cloth prefolds,
safety pins:safety_pin:, and plastic pants. The Desitin diaper rash cream, Johnson’s baby oil, and scented baby powder were what added much of the fragrance…our children and the diaper pail added the rest!
Stay padded and enjoy your new found freedom.
Its interesting you say this because I think thats where the patented scent originated, and perhaps mixed with some naturally occuring notes from the plastic or padding constituents themselves. The Luvs/Pampers scent nailed at least one note that comes from naturally occuring urine in my opinion, perhaps a pheromone, from its sweet smell because sometimes the smell of my own wet diapers mixed with any of the standard baby powder fragrances I use come very close to the patented diaper scent. It doesn’t happen often, but sometimes I get it from my diaper pail.
I can only think that whatever researchers came up with in the original Luvs/Pampers formula probably started with an artificial wet (or soiled?) diaper smell and tweaked it so it is pleasing to the nose, possibly with the removal of unpleasant aromatic sulfur compounds (?). This would be under the assumption that something that smells similar yet pleasing covers up better than smells that are oppositionally different. This also assumes you know the smell you are trying to cover up which in this case, I’d think researchers would use urine. Urine is the least common denominator in any diaper, since this is present normally even in soiled diapers.
For example, covering up a sardine smell from the inside of a trash-can with rose-scent as shown from an old Lysol commercial from the 90s, a little boy says “now it smells like fish and roses!”. Fish and roses are so completely different that one does not cover up the other very well. You end up smelling both.
By the way @thickdiapers, Walmart has been out of these wipes [infact the whole cleaning-wipe shelves have been empty] since the C0VID-19 crisis began and I can’t seem to find this online either. Is everyone else’s Walmart’s missing cannister wipes too? The baby wipes aisle came back to normal by mid-summer here although the “Powder Fresh” scented wipes looks like they were discontinued in the process.
I’m not really a good one to ask as when we were still married my wife used to accuse me of being nose blind. I’ve mostly lived in small towns, or out in the country and often spent much time working on dairy farms so my tolerance for various animal smells is pretty high with the exception of confinement hog facilities. When they empty their liquid manure holding pits it will clear your sinuses quicker than pure ammonia. Our kids often had dirty diapers that would preform similarly once the plastic pants were removed. After those examples I really don’t know how my wife could hold that opinion about my sense of smell.
perfumes raffy in California. google it. they have Amouage gold samples for $10
I used their baby powder scent. I takes some time for the two scents to dry down before you start to get something close to Pampers.
I still think the diaper scent was meant as a reward for the care giver, not a coverup.
