I love the smell from the 80’s when the diapers were double folded on each side. They leaked like no other but the smell. So is there anything out there right now that is close or exact to that smell?
Seems this question is being asked a lot lately. AFAIK, no.

Whoever can duplicate that smell will make a bunch of cash quickly! I remember the smell of Pampers was SO STRONG that you KNEW they were in the next aisle over when you were in a grocery store, shopping with your parents back then! I used to intentionally walk down that aisle, pretending to be lost, just to breath in that heavenly scent AND look at all of the packages (is it me or did they used to dedicate a hell of a lot more space on shelves to “Pampers” in the 70s-early 90s??? I seem to recall entire aisles, filled top to bottom on both sides of “Pampers” back then until Wally world and similar stores came onto the scene and then aisles got WAY shorted with a lot more variety but a lot less actual product displays. Then the scent VANISHED in the mid-latter 90s, and I don’t know why. DAMN, what an incredible, pleasant smell!
Well first off, Pampers and most diapers were boxed until the to mid to late 80s when packaging went to plastic. Boxes took up a lot more shelf space than the shrink wrapped packaging. I remember Luvs first came out they were in a box. Also the diapers were much thicker than they are today requiring bigger boxes.
2nd. The smell disappeared when the shrink wrapping started because the diaper were compressed and sealed in plastic. The boxes were basically folded and glued and had that perforated line where you opened them. There was really no seal but always a great scent.
There’s an old thread floating around here somewhere that I’ve seen a few times. There is/was a chemist who’s taken up being a perfumist as a hobby, with the goal of tracking down that scent and replicating it… I don’t really have an interest in the scent, but the process was certainly interesting…

Yeah, the short is I need a Canadian Luvs baby to reply with a placeholder, you get a freebie, maybe 2 people. I need some noses to test with, I was a pampers baby this is what I remember luvs smelling like, very flowery, the vanilla ties it together, it was overwhelmingly flowery before it. But Luvs wasn’t my diaper and smells are subjective.
While (if this is anything) it’s luvs rather than pampers it’s so close, it’s a hit on the battleship of #1. Since there had been no previous attempts in any way we didn’t even have a way to begin. I am the only person I have ever heard…

There have been a number of additional threads since then, from the look of it… Search for “perfumist,” and you’re sure to find more. They all seem to reference that first thread. It seems to be a very common topic.

Hey everybody - we had a good thread going over on [https://www.adisc.org/forum/threads...-baby-chemist-turned-perfumist.149305/page-19](https://www.adisc.org/forum/threads/luvs-pampers-fragrance-80s-baby-chemist-turned-perfumist.149305/page-19) and I just wanted to reboot it.
Also, at long last, I’ve done some perfumery. No more am I spraying dissolved Dreft dryer beads onto things. No more questionable attempts to distill things that probably shouldn’t be distilled. I decided that my lifelong fetish / obsession was worth some investment - I then acquired perfume chemicals!
Since my last post, I’ve learned the basics of perfumery and have had about 30 or so attempts…

Pampers used to smell like heaven itself. Nothing else compared or ever has. The DL market NEEDS a good diaper scent. If ABDL diapers came scent like baby powder that would be a huge step in the right direction. Having something we could spray on our diapers that even resembles Pampers would be the best thing ever. I can’t believe how under served this aspect of the DL market is. Some company has to do it. WE NEED IT! I want diapers to smell like Pampers again SO BAD. There’s just pretty much nothing out there right now
(((
I’m convinced the Pampers “Sweet Dream 18” formula has some vanilla in it. The warmth I feel when I smell a Pampers diaper is identical to how I feel when I smell Febreze “Baked Vanilla” or the identical sugar cookie smell.
What strikes me is how P&G, which owns both Pampers and Febreze, will make Febreze in a wide variety of scents, such as “Cozy Campfire” or even Gain…but not Pampers. It’s ridiculous. If Febreze ever came out in Pampers scent, I’d hit up Amazon for a case of it so fast, it’d make P&G hyperrotate on its axis. That’s not an idle declaration, neither…that’s a promise.
If I remember correctly, Bambino diapers used to have a scented version years ago. I haven’t been to their site for a long time so I don’t know if they still offer anything with a nice scent.
I needed more protection than I got with their diapers so I stopped ordering from there.
I actually just went to their site. They used to offer scented booster pads as well, but now they are labeled as non-scented.
Then my curiosity took me further and I searched for scented adult diapers. It seems Rearz makes two with a baby powder scent and one with a cotton candy scent. A company in England does make a perfume you can place a few drops in a diaper as well.
I think that was ABUniverse.
BTW, is that a WACO YMF-5 in your profile pic?
I already indicated to this person I’m a willing investor as I want in on the gold rush that will hit IF they can ever figure out how to reproduce that scent!!! I’m serious! I’d invest a hundy or 2!
Are ANY of these scents accurate or even close? I am NOT an AB but was a DL until life altering illnesses hammered me and led to U-IC with now borderline FULL IC (developing) issues and i no longer am “thrilled” about diapers, period. I WISH I could go back to NOT needing and only WANTING to wear, as that was always fun, exciting and exhilarating for fear of being caught whereas today everyone who is anyone in my life is fully aware of my dramatic and multifaceted health issues, including IC and diapers.
"The Thrill is Gone!’ I don’t recall who wrote/sand that song but it could easily be the them song of my life since Jan 18 2004!!!

Even AFTER they switched to plastic packaging, that scent STILL permeated that entire section of the supermarket or even Toys R Us, the very few times I was ever in that store as money was not something we had much of when I was growing up. Toys R Us was a rare trip to either kill time on a rainy day or once in a blue moon a birthday present. Good thing I had friends who had A LOT as my brother and I (along with many of our friends) used to LITERALLY have rock fights with massive chunks of RR ballast. There was a RR embankment, maybe 20’ tall directly behind our back yard so half would go one one side, half on the other and we’d spend HOURS firing ricks over the embankment (always warning everyone when they were “on the way” yet still someone needed stitches more times than I can count. When ROCKS are your toys,… yeah. Money is TIGHT LOL! Still, we were NEVER bored!
Thalooks a bit like a Boeing Stearman Kaydet. Just my impression…
in general, pampers scent is white flowers and citrus notes that combine in such a way to create a soapy clean scent. The unique aspects of the scent was it’s bigness. Perfumers call this sillage, it could easily fill the room and it was long lasting. I remember a poster here who worked in a Pampers factory explained how the scent came in drums and was highly diluted in water before being applied. Which gives a good idea of how concentrated the scent was; And it would need to be as the cardboard boxes were not air tight, which means that from the moment of application, the strength of the perfume is fading and yet it had to be there when the box was opened by the end user.
Everyone’s nose is different and no one has smelled this scent since 1990 when it ceased being used. If you want an idea of what I think it smelled like you can take a bar of dove soap, unwrap but do not open the box, and hold that over a canister of Walgreens orange flavored sugar free
fibre supplement. This fibre supplement has a orange candy smell. This has come the closest to me and is why i say white flowers and citrus.
Now, trying to find an existing perfume that matches this has proven impossible. If you ask the perfume boards for something that smells like Pampers, unfortunately, they use that word interchangeably for anything with a baby powder scent, but the original Pampers had nothing in common with baby powder. About Sweet Dream 16, it is important to note that this has an ingredient that did not exist before the late 1980’s, So while it may smell nice if someone made it, I don’t think it is the original Pampers formula. Sweet Dream 16 was developed by a small perfume division of P&G. That division was sold to Coty, who now owns those patents. The original Pampers scent was likely made by an outside contractor, and I doubt P&G even has the formula. The older patents will often refer to Symrise AC11881 and or Quest Q31535 which I suspect one of these are the actual original Pampers scent. Symrise is still in business here in USA, but was not helpful when asked.
Quest was a European scent company, no longer in business. They were sold to someone, but I have lost those references.
This is the best I can summarize what feels like a life long search. I do still believe there are over the counter perfumes that are close, but trying to find them has proven impossible.
That’s what I’ve been saying for years. ABU used to have a diaper called the lavender which had a nice scent to it but it was disconnected. Rearz has their lil Bella’s which has a cotton candy scent, but there’s really no true Pampers scent like what we’re looking for. Unless you go on to Etsy or Amazon and get that oil that you can just drip into your diaper to make it smell good.
I’ve been adding a few drops of cosmetic grade essential oils that have a “light”, “fruity” or citrus scent to my new diaper and gently rubbing the absorbent surface against itself before putting it on. It really helps with odor control!
Like @DelC I’m more interested in the chemistry than the Pampers/Luvs scent itself. Though I’m curious what it would smell like. Because I don’t really remember it from childhood even though I wore Pampers/Luvs in their heyday of the 80s.
You might not need to go to the expense and work of recreating it exactly. Something that’s “close enough” might be good enough for you. Buy some essential oils, start mixing and give it a try!
That would be B.B. King.
A Pampers mist spray would be Amazing!
If any products containing the fragrance still exist samples could be put into a mass spectrometer. But it’d be hard to exclude the absorbent material itself from the results. You’d need a sample of the absorbent material without the fragrance to be analyzed. Then you could roughly “subtract” those elements.
The mass spectrometer analysis would only give you a very “fuzzy” general idea of *some *of the chemical elements. Still, there’d be problems with the chemical degradation and off-gassing since 1990. That would skew whatever results you had.
Sounds like people want to recreate this scent based on their own subjective memories of it. Even if someone got close, there’d be people who’d say “it’s not the same way I remember it”.
Theres so many posts on this topic. I remember someone on here was trying to duplicate it but seems like forever and still trying to create it. who knows?.. Theres tons of baby scent and other babyish scents out there but the batch Ive tried over the years are just not the same at all.
Wah wash makes some really good scents and I believe their one called “Little One” Gets pretty close to the scent. They sell it in different formats like oils and sprays and am currently using it in my diffusor.
