Does anyone enjoy being told to close their eyes as a little, perhaps for a surprise? And if so, would you be good enough to keep them closed, perhaps for ten minutes, which can seem like an eternity to a youngster, or would you have to have a little peep now and again?
My story (no pun intended) is that I had a family member who was a fantastic storyteller, who liked to tell stories (about fairies, dragons and similar) to us younger children while we sat with her, but she always made us keep our eyes closed. She told us that if we did this, the magic would take us into the world she was telling us about; but if we opened our eyes at all, we would break the magic spell. I loved the stories, but my mind would always wander, and I could never resist peeping. She always spotted me doing it: even a bribe of giving sweets to those who kept their eyes closed didn’t work. She once made me sit in front of her while she put her hands firmly over my eyes for the duration of the story. For the next story after that, she told me that if I peeped again, I would find myself blindfolded. And surprise surprise, I did!
I think that is one reason I enjoy being told to close my eyes, or being blindfolded. Does anyone else enjoy keeping their eyes closed for stories or surprises?
Don’t know that I keep my eyes closed for your exact reason, but I like to close my eyes when I am listening intently about a subject. I process better with listening only when I really need to concentrate. Of course, I don’t do that if I am driving or walking where I really need to see where I am going. I hadn’t really thought about enjoying closing my eyes; I just automatically do it.
I always keep my eyes shut during stories but after a few minutes (Which yes can seem like an eternity) I finally give up and take a tiny peek. Sometimes I listen to people reading children’s stories such as “Where the Wild Things are” with my eyes closed to try and see how long I can keep them closed. But its always such fun!
