Cloth Diapering - any real tricks to it?

Mostly for my wife (she does nor have an account here).

Regardless of what type I have never been able to change my own diaper (and have had IC issues my whole life - she was aware of this actually before I met her [that is a story in itself] - only exception ever has been Pull-Ups, and they just didn’t work out for me!). Lately we have been using mostly cloth diapers, for the most part, she i doing fine with them - but every once in a while, it may seem like it’s on fine to start with - but there are a few times once it’s wet, and she goes to change it - seems like the ONLY thing holding it on was the plastic pants over it! - I have also, not badly, but got the point from a diaper pin a few times! (Ouch! )

Just been trying to figure out what if anything she is missing, ex. - attempted to find it in a web search, but all that was found was for adult cloth diapers with Velcro fashioners. - So any ideas, links, ex.?

Thank you!

Using A terry square fornappying is an art form similar to Origami, there are so many differnt types of fold from the simple rectangle fold (fold the nappy in half , pass under the body and fasten. the triangle fold, fold in half to make a triangle then place one end between the legs and fastento the sides. The Kite fold is probably the most useful as it can be adapted for male or female wearers who need extra cloth in different places.

Here’s a link to a good site for nappy folds, although these are for real babies, the folds are identical for adults -

Ultimate Terry Nappies Folding Guide
The ultimate guide to every Terry Square fold available. Follow The Nappy Lady’s step by step guide to folding and using terry nappies.

Nappy pins need to be kept sharp but you are probably getting pricked becaue your wife is having to force the pins through the cloth. To make it easier get a solid bar of washing soap and rub the pin with the soap, this allows it to pass through the warp and weft of the cloth rather than trying to ram it’s way through. You can also get Nappi nippas which are a three pronged fastner you would need to use 2 for an adult -

Nappi Nippas (Snappis)
The fabulous nappy fasteners which make safety pins a thing of the past. Ideal to use with terry squares, prefolds, muslins and some fitted nappies. Available as a pack of 3 or a single nippa.

or this style -

You will need to experiment with them, you may need to put two ends on the side of your nappy with the third leg across thr front or two on the fron anwd one on the side, whichever method works you will need 1 fastner for each side. Hope all that makes sense.

I’ve worn pin-on prefold diapers on and off for the past 35 years. Quite often, the plastic pants are the only thing holding the diaper up … which makes me very thankful for good elastics!

As PCBaby notes, the kite fold is very versatile. I imagine your wife can slide the diaper beneath you and then fold it to fit while you’re on it, which isn’t something easily accomplished with other folds.

Please tell us how your wife knew of your IC before you met! That sounds like an accomplishment in itself.

Thank you PCBaby**,** haven’t even looked at everything yet, but already the idea of coating the diaper pins with soap has been helpful!

That goes back to the late 1980s involving the wife of a drinking buddy I had (I no longer drink at all, but at the time…) she was well aware of the situation and was actually pretty use to it because her older brother also had life-long IC issues plus some general muscle issue (forget what one, she and her brother have been dead for years now - him due to that issue, her because of an accident - she was hit by a car while walking!) My wife and her worked together at the time. Pretty much, she played Cupid. But actually both Myself, and my wife were a bit on the shy side when it comes to hooking up with someone in that way. So, with that drinking buddies wife in the middle, both me and my wife knew quite a bit about each other before we actually met in person - that included bad habits, some medical issues, you name it - now there was still enough left that the whole thing was not boring - but also comfortable for both of us.

I use mini-bungees,

I’ve sharpened the point on the top one and bent it inwards a bit more.

Only had one mishap in years, due to creamy fingers, and they’re easier to fit than pins and comfier. (Lost count of the amount of times that I’d been pricked, stabbed and scratched by pins, either whilst fitting or when they pop open in the middle of the night).

I have tried cloth diapers when I first got into diapers. I could never get them to fit proper, and the extra laundry made me give up on them. I am hooked on disposables. Good luck.
