I’m new to adult diapers and I find myself struggling with putting them on properly. I’m pretty sure I’m putting them on wrong because there’s like a lot of extra plastic just around (can provide photo if needed)

I would say I have a similar issue with the part around the waist. I manage to get the hip to fit comfortably most of the time by applying the bottom tapes first, but the waist part usually seem to have a gap after I tape the top tapes and rise from my laying position. I usually do it laying on my back because it appears to be it’s more simple than doing it standing up.
I don’t have a photo but laying downs the best! And if your a boy make sure to have more in front than in back. I also think it’s good to prepare the diaper buy streching it bit to activate leg cuffs and fold to make a channel!
I lean against the wall to put them on. Usually in my bathroom where I can look in the mirror as I’m doing it. I also do the top tapes first contrary to what it seems most people do. I haven’t been able to make doing the bottom tapes first work for me.
First of all if ur a guy make sure you have more diaper in the front then the back. Then stretch the sides of the diaper out (not to tightly) then do your bottom tapes first, this is important to do first because it’s going to make sure you’re leak guards are up against ur legs enough to stop leaks if ur penis points up or to the side, mine does this often. Then ur top. However when u pull ur diaper up and get ready to do ur bottom tape make sure there’s enough room to have ur penis comfortably pointing down. If you can have it down most of the time that will be the best to prevent leaks. Hope this helped
For me my last step when taping top tapes is to suck tummy in, tape top two, then exhale. That way top tapes are snug.
When I change myself I always do it standing, I like to lay the diaper out, fold in half longways to make a big V, then I’ll add a little powder down the length of it. I put the diaper on by first stepping over it (don’t want to spill the powder) bring it up, lining it up with my backside, then sandwiching it between my backside and a wall by leaning back, The big trick here it to position your feet close together, causing your thighs to be close with each other, then bring the front of your diaper up and over your groin area, by keeping your legs close together, the diaper wont just go up and over yourself, the core of the diaper will stay in a V position and catch your thigh area keeping a V and automatically folding itself to form a pouch and a diaper seat so liquids can channel through, the front wings wont land flat to yourself, they’ll be angled downwards since the leak guards are form fitting, then tape the bottoms first then the top, it sounds complicated but its real easy and provided the best fit without that horrible W forming and poor seals in the seat area.

Plz correct me if I’m wrong but I believe when diapering yourself the front should come up to your belly button?
I use to think that too, but I’ve found the diaper itself works the best when the tapes are around your hip region vs your waist, this causes the front land zone to be about 2" below your belly button.

Ok. best is lying down
1, open up the nappy fully then fold in half lenght ways, this helps form a pocket and also helps absorbtion.
2, lay it on the bed with about 1/3rd hanging off the edge.
3, place your self on the nappy so that the back of the nappy is just above your waist line.
4, make sure you are located in the centre.
5, draw the front of the nappy up between your legs and make sure the wings are fully extended.
6, Tuck one wing around your side and then bring the back around and tape the bottom tape. Do the same on the other side. Make sure the bottom tapes make a snug fit.
7, faten the top tapes, again make sure that the top tapes make a snug fit around your waist.
8, finally if you are a little boy, make sure you are ointing down.
I always put my diaper on while laying down. It is the best way I have found to get a good fit. The only time I put a diaper on while standing up is when I have to change while away from home and i am using a public bathroom. When that happens, I lean my back against the wall to get a good fit. The only other way I have changed my diaper is in the woods and I would lean against a tree to get a good fit.
The biggest problem isn’t how you put it on, as people in here do it many different ways and it works for them, some do standing, leaning against wall, or laying. What matters most is that you get the right size diaper, and when you put it on just learn to match up the front and back and get the tapes snug but not tight, you’ll be able to feel what’s right the more you wear.
Read several posts about this subject before and can’t believe that I seem to be in the minority in that I don’t lay down to diaper up. I stand in the bath room. Once I have the diaper out and all stretched and fluffed up I straddle it and pull it up tight then lean against the counter in my bath room. That holds it in place while I pull one of the lower tabs tight and fasten down. I can then lean forward a bit to pull the opposite tight to tape the other bottom tab. Then back to the other top one and finish with the last one. Seems to work fine for me.
Fluff your diaper (there are YouTube videos on how to),
Bottom tapes first, point they slightly upwards.
Don’t make the tapes to tight or you will deal with tapes drifting.
Rub the tapes to cause a little friction, the heat will help the tapes bond to the diaper better.
try leaning against a wall to help hold the back still if you need too.

Laying down is the best imo, but I know some people who do it against a wall while standing , those people are epic ![]()
I prefer standing up and have started doing the top tapes first after many, many years doing the bottom tapes first. This is just my personal preference as lying down is actually more relaxing in a way but I find more difficult to get a tighter fit.
Idk your body build. I’m fairly narrow at 32" waist, 140lbs and 5’9.5" height. Medium diapers tend to fit me perfectly. I always tape lying down.
Open up the diaper FULLY! Heard somebody mention fluffing. If that works, do that. I just make sure all the leak guards are opened.
I measure from the back first. The back waist band of the diaper comes JUST over the line where my buttocks connects to my lower back. Note I do not mess, so this may be different for people.
I pull the diaper with a hand on each side out then up between my legs and squeeze the 2 sides together to form a ‘taco’ where my crotch is. You want those leak guards to fit the creases of your legs.
Pull the diaper up as high as it will go without pulling it out from under you. It’s best to point down as a guy, but my little guy invariably points up during a change. Otherwise things are problematic. I’m average in size, so this doesn’t cause major issues once deflated.
Flatten and tuck the front flaps one side at a time starting with the bottom tapes. I will keep my hand perfectly flat against my body to pull that diaper wing as far down my hip as possible and I will use my free hand to stretch that tape wing up and over as far as it will go without ripping. This is key! Make sure you have at least 1" distance from your leg and the diaper tape so the tape doesn’t rub on the skin.
After securing both bottom tapes, pull up the back and front waist bands to make sure it’s extra snug in the crotch area.
Follow the same flat tuck procedure for the top tapes. It needs to be flattened and taut as much as possible on each side. ANY slack will be amplified when you get up and start moving.
I know I did a good job when the tapes are just a few inches from touching and are as far above my penis head as possible so that even if I wet pointing up, the flat waistband against my belly prevents any top leaks.
Every body is different. Know your body and know what a good diapering feels like. Be particular about ALL the details and try your best to replicate results. It’s simple trial and error.
I tend to do better diapering myself with top tapes first instead of bottom while lying down.
